Notovoluta gerondiosi

We were quite surprised to find this gerondiosi crawling across silty sand in 255 metres of water WSW of Dongara in February 2023. I believe that this is as far south as the species has been recorded. The few specimens we have collected from this location are smaller than the hand full of specimens we have seen collected from farther north.

As can be seen in the photos, it was a live collected specimen and one of very few known.  It has a thick perfect lip and a couple of basal growth breaks from deep water crab encounters. We see this in nearly all volutes we collect from depths greater than 180 metres. The shell has a nice tented pattern and great dorsal display.
